Is Jesus the Son of David or the Son of God?

Scripture: Mark 12:36
What does Mark chapter 12 mean when it says 'The LORD said to my Lord?' If Jesus is the Son of David why does David call Him Lord?

Caller:My question is about Mark 12:36 where it says something about ‘the Lord said to my Lord’—you’re probably familiar with it. The only question I have is I think probably it’s the Father speaking to the Son, or the Son saying to the Father?

Pastor Doug: Yeah, the Lord, there, is speaking about the Lord God. You’ll notice it’s capitalized, LORD—all four letters are capitalized. That would mean My Lord. Here Christ is making reference to the statement in the Psalms, I believe, where He is talking about the relationship of—David was called the Lord, and it’s the Son of David who is called Lord, which was Christ, of course. It’s also telling us about the Trinity here, among other things.

Caller:Yeah?

Pastor Doug: Yeah, the Father is speaking to the Son.

Caller:Yeah, that’s what I thought it might be, the Father speaking to the Son.

Pastor Doug: And Christ is trying to translate that truth to the listeners. The reason you heard me hesitating here, I was looking forPsalm 110:1—it’s a Psalm of David: ‘The Lord said unto my Lord, sit Thou at my right hand until I make Thine enemies Thy footstool.’ Here we’re getting a picture into the throne room of God the Father and the Son, God the Father is bringing submission to the children. Okay?

Caller:Okay. Thanks a lot. And thanks for having this program. I know a lot of people love it, and I do.

Pastor Doug: Well, thank you so much. I appreciate that.
