Hidden 300 feet beneath the countryside on the border of Switzerland and France is the most expensive and complex scientific instrument ever built by human hands.
Housed in a huge 17-mile-long circular tunnel, the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) was built by the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) with the aim of allowing scientists to crack the mystery of high-energy physics.
They’re asking, “What holds matter together?” The experiment is designed to find the missing ingredient for understanding the structure of matter and to prove, or disprove, the existence of the elusive Higgs boson, also known as “the God particle."
The process of discovery is achieved by firing subatomic particles, such as protons, through a vacuum tube over 1,000 super-cooled magnets, which focus and accelerate them to nearly the speed of light, then smashing those particles together and testing the results. The LHC took about a decade to construct, from 1998 to 2008, and costs for building and running the instrument presently are estimated to be about $13.25 billion.
It’s something of a paradox that the biggest instrument in the world is needed to study the smallest particle in the universe. It reminds me of the paradox of how the Creator of the universe had to become a baby to save the world. And, it turns out, that was the most expensive project in the universe.
The Scriptures teach that ultimately Jesus is the “God particle” that holds everything together. He is also able to hold your life together. Why not ask Him today?
“For by Him all things were created that are in heaven and that are on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers. All things were created through Him and for Him. And He is before all things, and in Him all things consist” (Colossians 1:16, 17 NKJV).
