Nepal Flooding: A Warning and a Hope

A massive flash flood and debris flow struck the Nepal-China border on Wednesday, August 26, 2026. It started with an ice and rock avalanche that temporarily dammed a river. The natural dam then gave way, causing the Lhende Khola, Bhote Koshi, and Trishuli river systems to rapidly overflow. Nepal’s Rasuwa District took the brunt. But the flooding pushed downstream into Nuwakot and Dhading and spilled across the border into Tibet’s Gyirong County.

Al Jazeera put confirmed deaths at 270 in Nepal and three in Tibet, with nearly 1,500 people missing on both sides of the border. Nepalese authorities counted 826 missing, almost 600 of them foreign tourists, while Chinese officials reported 558 missing in Gyirong County. Recent numbers from the Associated Press were higher still—more than 350 dead, over 1,300 missing.

The structural damage is staggering too. At least 19 bridges are gone, along with roughly 25 miles of roads, per PBS. Hydropower plants, homes, businesses, border infrastructure—all hit. And in many of these communities, mud and debris have made it nearly impossible to get in or out.

Romans 8:22 says that “the whole creation groans and labors with birth pangs.” Is the flooding in Nepal and Tibet another birth pang? And if so, what might be coming next?

Climate Change

Preliminary satellite analysis indicates that part of a glacier on the Nepalese side of the Himalayas broke away at roughly 17,060 feet in altitude. The mass of glacier ice fell 3,937 feet, carrying ice, rock, and sediment into the valley below. The ice-rock avalanche appears to have obstructed the Lhende River; water then accumulated and released downstream as a destructive debris-filled surge. Some experts say climate change and rising temperatures contributed to the conditions that led to the glacier’s collapse.

Reports from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and the World Meteorological Organization say that July 2026 tied July 2024 as the planet’s warmest July on record. Moreover, the ten warmest Julys have all occurred since 2016, with 2023–2026 occupying the top four positions in that ranking.

Europe, Asia, Africa, and North America experienced major heatwaves during the first half of the year. Munich Re described the North American and European heatwaves as virtually impossible at their observed intensity without human-caused climate change.

It’s hard to deny that Earth is heating up. But while climate change activists are blaming carbon emissions and greenhouse gases, the Bible points to a different narrative.

The Real Cause of Earth’s Disasters

After Adam and Eve’s tragic disobedience in Eden, God said to Adam, “Cursed is the ground for your sake; in toil you shall eat of it all the days of your life. Both thorns and thistles it shall bring forth for you, and … in the sweat of your face you shall eat bread” (Genesis 3:17–19).

There we see the beginning of creation’s suffering under sin. Humanity’s rebellion affected not only our relationship with God but also the natural world entrusted to our care. God cursed the earth because of disobedience, and the environment was no longer mild and optimal for living and farming. But notice that the ground was cursed for “your sake.” Even these painful consequences can remind us of what sin has done and awaken in us a desire for God’s salvation.

“Look to Me, and be saved, all you ends of the earth! For I am God, and there is no other” (Isaiah 45:22).

Sadly, humans did not learn the lesson. As each generation passed and they multiplied, so did their rebellion. “Then the LORD saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every intent of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually” (Genesis 6:5).

So how did God respond? He had Noah build an ark and warn the people that a flood was coming. All had an opportunity to get on the ark before disaster struck. Few listened. Only eight were saved.

Some creationist researchers propose that the Flood radically altered the earth’s land, oceans, and atmosphere, contributing to a more volatile post-Flood climate. It radically altered our land, oceans, and atmosphere, leading to a much more volatile climate. That’s why we see so many natural disasters today. Again, it’s all the result of sin.

Get on the Ark!

Jesus said, “For as in the days before the flood, they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noah entered the ark, and did not know until the flood came and took them all away, so also will the coming of the Son of Man be” (Matthew 24:38, 39).

It seems as though these birth pangs are coming in rapid succession. And we are told that they will only intensify as we near the Second Coming. We’ve been warned: “The day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night, in which the heavens will pass away with a great noise, and the elements will melt with fervent heat; both the earth and the works that are in it will be burned up” (2 Peter 3:10).

God has told us what’s coming because He wants us to get on the ark!

In response to the flooding on the Nepal-China border, more than 5,000 Nepalese Army and police personnel have been mobilized, using helicopters, drones, and search dogs. Additionally, India has sent aircraft carrying emergency supplies, and several other nations and organizations are providing manpower and funds to support relief efforts. Let’s not forget to pray for their success.

Similarly, God responded to the disaster of sin that struck our world by sending His Son on the ultimate rescue mission. His resources are unlimited, and “He is also able to save to the uttermost those who come to God through Him” (Hebrews 7:25).

Shortly before the Flood, God said, “My Spirit shall not strive with man forever” (Genesis 6:3). God’s warning to the antediluvian world reminds us that we should not continually resist the pleading of His Spirit.
