A Sure Thing

Daily Devotional Audio

While in Wyoming’s Yellowstone National Park, visitors can count on the Old Faithful geyser to erupt every 45 to 120 minutes. Over the past 80 years, however, the interval of time between eruptions has progressively expanded, likely due to the effects of numerous earthquakes.

More dependable than Old Faithful is the Word of God. “It is impossible for God to lie” (Hebrews 6:18); we can know that His Word is always true. The Bible also says, “He remains faithful; He cannot deny Himself” (2 Timothy 2:13).

Though the final events may alarm and even frighten, you can count on God’s promise of salvation. Though the devil’s attacks will be rapid and ferocious, the Word of God is steady and sure. It has not changed and will not change because God does not change (Malachi 3:6; Hebrews 13:8).

Today’s passage mirrors Revelation 1:1. First, the book of Revelation originated with God, who always tells the truth. Second, Revelation was written for the benefit of His people. Third, the events described in Revelation are prophecies that will happen soon.

An additional detail is also noted: God is “the Lord God of the holy prophets.” We are told that Bible prophecy is communicated to the people who “spoke as they were moved by the Holy Spirit” (2 Peter 1:21). As John evidenced in Revelation 1:10, “I was in the Spirit on the Lord’s Day.” The third person of the Godhead was the conduit behind all these messages.

Today’s verse becomes even more meaningful when contemplating the verses just prior, which describe the eternal life of the saints with the Creator on the earth made new. We can be sure of this reality—because God said it will be our reality.

Jesus, Word of God, please establish and empower my faith through Your prophetic messages in the book of Revelation.
