The Blessed Trinity
Read Time: 2 min

Today, we learn that Revelation is addressed to seven specific churches located in Asia, known better as Asia Minor.
John next introduced the Trinity: God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. He first emphasized the eternal nature (Psalm 90:2) of God the Father, “Him who is and who was and who is to come.” Next, God the Holy Spirit is “the seven Spirits who are before His throne.” Notice how in just these first few verses, the number seven is already prominent; its meaning of perfection certainly applies to the Godhead. Some also suggest a connection with the seven gifts of the Spirit revealed in the life of Jesus (Isaiah 11:2) or those promised to believers (1 Corinthians 12:4–11).
Then, in John’s description of God the Son is another set of three. As “the faithful witness,” Jesus Christ “is the image of the invisible God” (Colossians 1:15), “God with us” (Matthew 1:23), God’s Word incarnate (John 1:1, 14). The purpose of His earthly life was to “bear witness to the truth” (18:37). Recall this also to be an attribute of the Holy Spirit.
Now, the phrase “the firstborn from the dead” does not mean that Christ was created. How can He be when “by Him all things were created”? (Colossians 1:16). Instead, see the phrase’s meaning in Psalm 89:27, when God said of David, “I will make him My firstborn, the highest of the kings of the earth.” In this sense “the firstborn” is not the eldest child; it means the greatest of or especially distinguished from a certain kind. The Bible also uses the word “first” to indicate origin. Christ is the greatest of those who had died because from His death and resurrection all salvation originates (1 Corinthians 15:20).
Lastly, John’s threefold description represents three landmarks in God’s plan of salvation: Jesus’ perfect life on earth, the execution of the gospel in His death and resurrection, and His ultimate victory as King of kings.
Lord, may the gifts of the Spirit rest upon me as I study this book of prophecy.
