Bold Fishermen
Read Time: 2 min

While deep-sea fishing, professional angler Stewart Campbell was jerked over the side of his boat and into the ocean by a giant marlin. Fortunately, the line that was connected to his fishing harness snapped within seconds and he survived. Others have not come out so well. A number of people have drowned in similar circumstances as the line held and the fish dragged them deep into the sea. It’s doubtful that the fisherman Peter ever had to deal with a fish that rambunctious. However, after he changed his career and began fishing for people, he certainly encountered more dangerous game.
When Peter kept his eyes on people and situations rather than on Jesus, he was dragged down and nearly drowned spiritually. But the lesson he learned in the courtyard at Jesus’ trial changed his focus. From then on, he was centered on Christ.
After Pentecost, Peter and the other apostles were determined to preach in Jerusalem in the name of Jesus, whatever the cost. When threatened by the angry priests and rulers, they responded with boldness, “We ought to obey God rather than men. The God of our fathers raised up Jesus whom you murdered by hanging on a tree. Him God has exalted to His right hand to be Prince and Savior, to give repentance to Israel and forgiveness of sins. And we are His witnesses to these things, and so also is the Holy Spirit whom God has given to those who obey Him” (Acts 5:29–32).
