What Will It Take to Stop the Madness?

Three policemen died and three others were wounded on July 17 in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, when 29-year-old Gavin Eugene Long opened fired on the officers. Long was also killed in the shootout. The ambush took place during a time of turmoil in the city, which was experiencing ongoing protests after the killing of Alton Sterling by police two weeks prior. It comes soon after the Dallas police shootings on July 7 that killed five officers.

Almost 300 people were killed and more than a thousand injured during an unsuccessful coup d’état in Turkey between July 15 and 16. The group responsible for the attempt called themselves the Turkish Peace Council and bombed the Turkish Parliament, the Ankara Presidential Palace, with additional clashes between police officers and pro-coup soldiers. The effort to oust Turkish President Erdogan has been condemned locally and internationally as was followed by mass arrests.

And in a third major terrorist attack in France since January 2015, a Tunisian-born resident purposely drove a 19-ton truck into crowds of people celebrating Bastille Day in Nice on July 14. He killed 84 people, including 10 children, and injured over 300. The horrific attack ended when police shot and killed the driver after he had driven over a mile on his killing rampage.

Not a few people have reflected on these shootings and killings over the last few weeks and have asked, “When will this madness stop?” The morning after the Dallas shootings, Mayor Charlie Hales said, “Every shot, every shell casing is one more tragedy. This is madness and it must stop.” Will such insanity ever end?

The Bible predicts that the forces of evil are straining to be unleashed on the earth causing disaster and destruction. “After these things I saw four angels standing at the four corners of the earth, holding the four winds of the earth, that the wind should not blow on the earth, on the sea, or on any tree” (Revelation 7:1). In mercy, God holds back Satan’s plan to obliterate the planet.

But as we near Christ’s soon return, the cup of iniquity filled by the self-serving wickedness of humanity will finally be reached and the winds of destruction will be released. The whole world will be involved in raging ruin as the passions of evil are unrestrained. The escalating events we are seeing confirm that the time is near. Our only safety is in Christ. Turn your eyes upon Jesus and tell others that our loving God is grieved by the carnage and will soon put a final end to all the madness.
