Seeds of Truth in Danger?

Seeds of Truth in Danger?
More than eight hundred miles north of the Arctic Circle, Norway has built the Svalbard Global Seed Vault to be a secure seed storage center for the world in case of a local or global catastrophe. The vault is built into solid rock and is kept at close to 0F year-round. It holds more than 4,000 species of plants.

This year has been unusually warm, resulting in an increase of snowmelt. The water runoff caused flooding in the tunnel leading to the vault. The water then froze and created a glacier-like block of ice that workers had to chip through to reach the vault. None of the seeds was lost because of tight controls and quick action from the Norwegian government. New measures are being implemented to reduce the risk of flooding in the future.

The international research center ICARDA, located in Aleppo, Syria, used the vault for the first time to replace seeds lost to a region in 2015. This usage highlighted part of the purpose of the vault.

Jesus identified God’s Word as seed (Luke 8:11) that will grow a crop of faithful followers who will reproduce themselves as disciples in the world. God instructed His people to share His Word faithfully but warned them that “the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine … and they will turn their ears away from the truth, and be turned aside to fables” (2 Timothy 4:2–4).

At this time in earth’s history, we see a turning away from Bible truth and a desire for pleasing fables. A prophet warned, “Behold, the days are coming, says the Lord God, that I will send a famine on the land, not a famine of bread, nor a thirst for water, but of hearing the words of the Lord” (Amos 8:11).

The question for us is, Are we storing God's Word safely in our own vault in preparation for the famine to come? Jesus likened faithful followers of His Word to builders of a house. Just as the vault in Norway is built into solid rock, our only safety is in building on the Solid Rock—Jesus Christ.
