Asteroid Apocalypse?

August 01, 2017
Asteroid Apocalypse?
As one of its missions, NASA is tasked with identifying and tracking potentially hazardous comets and asteroids. Now researchers there are excited about a unique opportunity to test their international asteroid detection and activation system in a few months. On October 12, Asteroid 2012 TC4 is expected to pass close by our planet.

Estimates place the trajectory of this 30- to 100-foot asteroid between 4,200 miles and 170,000 miles from Earth. While that is quite a range, scientists are pretty sure it won’t actually strike the planet. First identified in 2012, it has since traveled too far away for earth-bound telescopes to see it. Now, experts are excited for the opportunity to test their latest technology, calculations, and international collaboration capabilities.

While scientists are tracking heavenly bodies, and can predict with some accuracy their flight-paths, the Bible identifies an imminent event soon to change the course of history—the coming of Christ! Even though we don’t have an exact date, like the arrival of the 2012 TC4, the Bible gives us clear indicators so we can be prepared.

The signs in our world—wars, natural disasters, false christs—tell us that Jesus’ coming is soon, even at the door (Matthew 24:33). But the one thing that still needs to happen is for the gospel to reach the whole world. That is the part we must play in these last days, sharing the amazing story of Christ’s love and grace with our neighbors and our families.

Jesus said, “Behold, I am coming as a thief. Blessed is he who watches, and keeps his garments, lest he walk naked and they see his shame.” (Revelation 16:15) Over and over, we are reminded to watch and pray so that we are ready for when Jesus comes. (See Matthew 24:42; Luke 21:36.)
