The Indestructible Word

Daily Devotional Audio

Have you ever watched a baby use a book? They don’t usually hold it open with their hands and carefully turn pages. No, the book usually goes straight into their mouths. Paper books are a favorite for many babies since they crinkle and crunch. But pages can potentially turn into soggy pieces that could choke a toddler. That’s why some companies actually create tear-resistant and waterproof books made of durable material, which can be chewed on and even thrown into a wash machine if needed.

One of the strongest evidences that the Bible is truly the Word of God is that it is indestructible. It has suffered more vicious attacks than any other book in all of history because it claims to be God’s Word.

During the early church, the Roman emperor Diocletian tried to suppress the spread of Christianity and, according to Eusebius, “Royal edicts were published everywhere, commanding that the churches be leveled to the ground and the Scriptures destroyed by fire.” During this time, if a person was discovered to have a copy of the Bible and failed to surrender it to be burned, they would be killed.

Diocletian eventually boasted, “I have completely exterminated the Christian writings from the face of the earth!” Yet when Constantine next ruled, he wanted copies of the Bible in every church. Since all Bibles had supposedly been destroyed, he offered a reward for any copy of the Word of God. Within 24 hours he had fifty copies of the Bible brought to him.

During the Middle Ages, the Roman Church burned thousands of copies of the Bible. The Frenchman Voltaire, who died in 1778, also attempted to destroy the Scriptures. Even though efforts have been made to refute, overthrow, demolish, and burn the Bible, “the word of our God stands forever.”

Apply It:

Take a Bible in your hands and prayerfully thank God that you not only own a copy of the Scriptures, but that it is an everlasting source of truth.
