When we see the light from the “front” star of the Big Dipper constellation, we are actually seeing what it looked like before we were born. This is because that star, Dubhe, is between 60 and 125 lightyears away. That means that it took the light more than 60 years to arrive in our eyes. It is fascinating to consider what is currently happening out there in the Big Dipper that we will not know about until we have entered into eternal life.
Paul explained that Jesus’ divine life did not have a beginning. However, unlike the light that we see in the night sky, we have instant access to Christ’s companionship and wisdom. We do not have to wait hundreds of years to receive a response to prayer. At the same time, we can trust that Jesus’ wisdom far surpasses that of any human because He knows our history better than we do.
Sometimes we have a hard time understanding ourselves, and we ask our parents what we were like as children. God, however, understands our past perfectly. He was there when our great grandparents were making decisions that would affect who we are today. As a result of His exhaustive knowledge of the decisions of every generation that has preceded us, we can trust that Christ knows and will “supply” our “need” (Philippians 4:19).
This also means He is the final authority on our history. Sometimes family members or friends may look down on us because they think they understand our past. However, Christ, who existed before there was a Big Dipper, knows our past and still loves us. “God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us” (Romans 5:8). Now that’s a piece of history that is life changing!
