Believing is Seeing

Many scientists, cosmologists, and even some agnostics agree that our universe appears as if it was designed for life. The foundation and location of our solar system and planet are in a delicate balance for us to live on Earth. For instance, the “habitable zone” of the earth’s orbit around the sun is very narrow. If it were slightly closer or slightly farther away, a stable water cycle would be impossible. We would either freeze to death or die from unbearable heat.
The surface gravity on Earth is perfect to sustain life. If it were stronger, the atmosphere would contain too much methane and ammonia and kill us. If it were weaker, our planet wouldn’t be able to retain enough water. The atmosphere is finely calibrated in its ratio of oxygen to nitrogen. Even our moon helps sustain life on Earth. The moon stabilizes the earth’s orbit and rotation, preventing a more dramatic wobbling effect.
While there are thousands of evidences for the existence of God, none of them proves God. The Lord has chosen to reveal Himself through nature and the Bible, general and special revelation, but He encourages us to believe (see John 3:16). All the amazing design we see in our universe points to a Designer, and all the fine-tuning of the elements on our planet so that life can exist indicates that there must be a Fine-tuner.
Yet the Lord, in respecting our freedom of choice, allows us to doubt or believe that life is the result of chance or intentional purpose. In order to truly see the God of creation, there is a necessary element called faith. Joshua challenged Israel to “choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve” (Joshua 24:15). The Bible teaches that unless we choose to believe, we cannot see the Designer who made all that we observe.

But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him. (Hebrews 11:6 KJV)
