The name Simeon means “God hears me.” Simeon was the second son of Jacob by Leah (Genesis 29:33). He is mostly remembered for his violence when, along with his brother Levi, he killed the men of Shechem to avenge the abuse of his sister (Genesis 34). Despite this vengeful act, Simeon’s talents for war were later used to help his brother in conquering the Promised Land (Judges 1:3), and eventually, Simeon accepted reforms instituted by King Asa (2 Chronicles 15:9).

Levi means “And is joined to me.” When Moses came down from Sinai and found the children of Israel worshiping the golden calf, he stood in the gate of the camp and said, “Whoever is on the LORD’s side, come to me!” The Bible records, “All the sons of Levi gathered themselves to him” (Exodus 32:26). For this reason, Levi was entrusted with the priesthood. They taught the law, interceded for the people before God, and were sustained by the offerings of the people for the work of God.

Issachar means “He has purchased me.” Issachar was acknowledged as having good discernment. In 1 Chronicles 12:32, we read that they “had understanding of the times, to know what Israel ought to do.” This tribe represents those who are willing and able to accept heavy responsibilities in the cause of God, planning the best course for the people to follow. Like Ezekiel, they were to be watchmen, declaring the prophetic unfoldings of their day and warning the people of approaching danger (Ezekiel 3:16–21).

Levi and its priesthood especially stand out in these last days. We are told that Jesus “has made us … priests to our God and Father” (Revelation 1:6, emphasis added). “You are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, His own special people” (1 Peter 2:9). The work that the priests performed is a work for all of us who have accepted Jesus. We are all called to invest ourselves in the work of saving the lost, and God promises that He will sustain us and be our portion (Numbers 18:20).

Dear Lord, write in my heart those graceful words, “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” Help me to represent you as a faithful intercessor for my fellow man.
