Guided to Safety

Daily Devotional Audio

Clutching his briefcase in one hand and his white walking stick in the other, Mike Wyatt ambled toward the train tracks at the Peoria Station in Aurora, Colorado. The station was noisy as usual, and the blind man didn’t hear the fast-approaching train. But just as he was about to step onto the tracks, strong arms grasped his own and pulled him backward and out of the danger zone. The grandfather of seven is grateful to the one who saved his life by reaching out to move him to safety.

In the same way, before we come to Jesus, we are spiritually blind and headed toward certain disaster. But the Holy Spirit reaches out to save us by drawing us to Jesus.

Christ told His followers, “I will pray the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you forever” (John 14:16). The Greek word that is translated as “Helper” in this verse is Parakletos, which is translated in other versions as “Comforter” and “Counselor.” It can also be translated as “Mediator.”

In the Bible, only Jesus and the Holy Spirit are referred to by this word. Similarly to the way Jesus is our Helper and Mediator, the Holy Spirit brings us to the safety of our Redeemer and reveals our Savior’s love and grace. “The love of God has been poured out in our hearts by the Holy Spirit who was given to us” (Romans 5:5). Indeed, the Scriptures refer to the Holy Spirit as “the Spirit of grace” (Hebrews 10:29). This is a critical function, because it is grace that melts our hearts and begins to transform us into

true children of God.
