Heavenly Reward

Daily Devotional Audio

There are few texts that more clearly indicate a pre-advent judgment. When Christ comes again, His reward is with Him. In order to “give to every one according to his work,” each person must have already had their cases reviewed and a judgment pronounced: “eternal life to those who by patient continuance in doing good seek for glory, honor, and immortality; but to those who … obey unrighteousness—indignation and wrath” (Romans 2:7, 8). Does this idea conflict with the teaching that “by grace you have been saved through faith”? (Ephesians 2:8, 9).

The Scriptures are clear: “The wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord” (Romans 6:23). Paul writes that “all have sinned” (Romans 3:23), meaning that all are in debt to pay the price of sin, which is their lives. For those who accept Christ, their debt has been paid by His sacrifice on their behalf. Thus, salvation is not the reward. We receive Christ and are renewed by Him because He loves us, not because we earned it.

But does this mean that faithfulness shall not be rewarded? First, take a look at what God said to Abraham: “I am… your exceedingly great reward” (Genesis 15:1). Is not the blessing of seeing Jesus face to face a reward to those who are faithful? Consider also, “knowing that from the Lord you will receive the reward of the inheritance; for you serve the Lord Christ” (Colossians 3:24). Jesus says to those who are persecuted for His sake, “great is your reward in heaven” (Matthew 5:12).

What are we doing with the gifts and talents given to us by Jesus? How are we spending our days as probation quickly comes to an end? Are our works worthy of our profession? Jesus will soon return. May we hear His words: “Well done, good and faithful servant; you were faithful over a few things, I will make you ruler over many things. Enter into the joy of your lord” (Matthew 25:21).

Father in heaven, renew my heart that my life may glorify You.
