Invisible Attributes

Daily Devotional Audio

Why would a brave police officer risk his life by leaning over a balcony and handcuffing himself to a woman who was about to jump to her death? Why would an 82-year-old barber bring a chair out into a park and offer to cut hair for homeless people for free? Why would softball players carry an injured batter for the other team to home plate so she could score?

Another evidence for the existence of God comes from what is called the “moral” argument. If you look at every culture in the history of humanity, all of them have had some sort of law. Every civilization throughout the ages has had some sense of right and wrong. Even the Bible explains, “For when Gentiles, who do not have the law, by nature do the things in the law, these, although not having the law, are a law to themselves” (Romans 2:14). When someone does a random act of kindness, people sit up and take notice.

Where does the essence of right and wrong come from, if not from a holy God who upholds the universe by laws? The apostle Paul spoke of the Godhead—the Father, Son, and Spirit—and explained that even without the Bible, people can recognize God’s “invisible attributes” (Romans 1:20)—that is, His characteristics such as love and justice.

People may still choose to not believe in the existence of God because they think His existence lacks scientific proof. Paul says such unbelievers have evidence but choose to “believe the lie” (2 Thessalonians 2:11) and so they “are without excuse” (Romans 1:20). Ultimately, everyone may know, by looking at our world, that in the presence of tragedy there is kindness that comes from above.

By the way, after the police officer handcuffed himself to the woman who was about to jump to her death, he threw away the key. Do you know that God loves you so much that Jesus came to die in your place? He was willing to throw away His own life to save you from certain death.
