Jesus as Our Example

Daily Devotional Audio

Growing up, it’s likely you had someone in your life whom you admired—perhaps a teacher, an athlete, or even a political figure. You might have wanted to pattern part of your life after the way he or she lived: “I want to be just like …”

But even the best of human role models have their flaws. They are, after all, flesh-and-blood beings who are susceptible to human failings and human sins. The “bad” side may not have been evident during their lifetimes, but it’s often exposed after their passing, usually via a “tell-all” book or documentary.

There is, as you might imagine (or hope for!), a wonderful exception to the rule. His name is Jesus, and He was fully human and fully divine. He was also sinless. Jesus, we read in Hebrews 4:15, “was in all points tempted as we are, yet without sin.”

This is good news for everyone, but especially for those who follow Jesus. We have a role model whom we can emulate without fear. Indeed, acting as much like Jesus as we can is an admirable activity. We should think about what He thought about, love what He loved, and shun what He avoided.

How much happier would our lives be—how much better the whole world would be—if we took Peter’s advice: “To this you were called, because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that you

should follow His steps” (1 Peter 2:21).
