May The Sabbath-keeping Restauranteur, Part 2

Daily Devotional Audio

If May truly believed that the fourth commandment still existed today, then that would mean that neither she nor anyone who worked for her ought to be laboring on the seventh day—including those in her three restaurants, her business partner, their entire staff. But she earned her living from those three restaurants.

Closing them down on the busiest day of the week would mean reconfiguring employee wages, schedules, food preparation—and, after all that, would it even be feasible to survive the inevitable loss of profit? All of those people were depending upon her, not least of all her business partner, a personal friend.

So May did the only sensible thing she could. She invited her business partner to the Sabbath-keeping church.

Some time passed as May and her partner both began to attend the Sabbath-keeping church. Toward the end of the year, May finally decided to approach her about the biblical Sabbath. She, just like May, was convicted to keep the seventh day holy. They began praying for God’s guidance and ultimately decided to close all three restaurants on Saturdays. As for their employees, May and her business partner resolved to keep their wages the same—paying them as though they had worked the seventh day.

Not surprisingly, the restaurants began to lose money. No one could understand why May had made the decision she had—and all for what? For religion? For an old, obsolete law? But May and her partner continued to keep the Sabbath, believing that obeying God was above all else. And slowly but surely, the blessings began to come. Eventually, May’s three restaurants began to bring in more and more business and are currently bringing in even more profit than when they were open on Saturdays!

May has since shared Amazing Facts with her friends and family. Now, more than 100 of them spend Sabbath evenings watching Amazing Facts online and gathering together for regular discussion of what they have learned.

Praise God for the seed of faith that a single message had planted in May’s heart. From it grew a soul eager to follow the Word of God and lead others to it.

Reflect: Have you ever been in a difficult situation where you were tempted to break God’s Sabbath day? God promises to honor those who honor Him.

Key Bible Texts

If thou turn away thy foot from the sabbath, from doing thy pleasure on my holy day; and call the sabbath a delight, the holy of the LORD, honourable; and shalt honour him, not doing thine own ways, nor finding thine own pleasure, nor speaking thine own words: (Isaiah 58:13 KJV)
