Take a vacation, go to a conference, read, talk to leaders, and get a hobby. These are some of the recommendations made by successful entrepreneurs for cultivating creativity. The idea is that even the most creative people run into phases when they are stuck. If they have trouble finding ways to innovate in an ever-changing market, these methods are supposed to get their creativity flowing again.
God has no problem being creative. He does not need any of the suggestions these experts provide. The Bible tells us that God is still creating our new identities as Christians and preparing us for the new earth. When the Lord says, “Behold, I make all things new” (Revelation 21:5), remember, that new creation includes you!
The prophet Isaiah and other Bible writers recognized that God’s salvation is similar to the work of a potter: “Now, O Lord, You are our Father; we are the clay, and You our potter; and all we are the work of Your hand” (Isaiah 64:8). This imagery of the potter reminds us that as God forms us to reflect His moral image, He is producing new creative masterpieces. It is comforting to think that the Master Artist, who brought this universe into existence, is still at work in our lives.
Furthermore, God does not want to form us back into His image without also providing us with a perfect world. This is why we can look forward to His creative activity in the future when our planet will be remade: “Behold, I create new heavens and a new earth; and the former shall not be remembered or come to mind” (Isaiah 65:17). From this perspective we can be grateful that the source of all creativity will continue to amaze us. While we wait for that day, we can watch His re-creative work in us.
