Other Prophets

He was almost never found. For years, Howard Carter, a British archaeologist, had systematically scoured the Valley of the Kings looking for the tomb of a little-known king named Tutankhamun. Then on November 4, 1922, while digging in the Valley of the Kings, Carter found a stairway that led him to the unopened tomb.

Tutankhamun had rested in obscurity for three thousand years. After the excavations of the late 1800s, most archaeologists thought the valley had given up all its secrets, but Carter believed there was a tomb of an obscure king from the 18th dynasty. What he uncovered—priceless treasures, thrones, statues, chariots, and even a solid gold coffin—has since made the boy king Egypt’s most famous Pharaoh.

Most people know the famous prophets of the Bible because they have books named after them—Samuel, Isaiah, Jeremiah, Daniel, Ezekiel, etc. Even Moses was a prophet who left us with the first five books of the Old Testament. But sometimes we forget about other prophets and prophetesses who are not well-known, since they didn’t leave major testimonies that became part of the Bible—for example, Agabus (Acts 11:28) and Philip’s four daughters (Acts 21:9).

The prophet Joel wrote how the Holy Spirit would be poured out at the time of the end: “Your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions. And also on My menservants and on My maidservants I will pour out My Spirit in those days” (Joel 2:28, 29).

We’ve already learned that the gift of prophecy would continue after the close of the Bible canon. This gift would continue to uphold the Scriptures, explain its teachings, and edify the church. Postbiblical

prophets would help the church carry out its mission, but never contradict previously recorded divine revelation. (See Daniel 9:2.) The same God who inspired the prophets of the Bible gives the prophetic gift to His last-day people with messages that do not supersede Scriptures.
