Sister Muthoni Mighty Weapons, Part 1

Daily Devotional Audio

What would you do if your child was demon possessed? Take the child to a Pentecostal deliverance church? Visit a witch-doctor? Sister Muthoni in Kenya tried both.

Twenty years ago, Muthoni joined a Sabbath-keeping church. Her husband never did follow her in that decision, and when he died ten years later, he left her alone with two daughters, one in high school, the other in junior high. Muthoni’s oldest daughter began experiencing demonic attacks shortly after the death of her father.

One day, a young man came for her, stating that she belonged to “their” family. Muthoni’s daughter had never seen the man before, so she refused to go with him. Whether the man was a demon in human form, or a human working with demons, will never be known, but from then on their family troubles got worse.

That night, the daughter received a ticket to attend a secret occult meeting. Thoroughly frightened, she told her mother the whole story of what had been happening. Muthoni called for the church elder and pastor to come pray over her daughter, but nothing seemed to help.

When school started again that year, Muthoni’s eldest daughter returned to her boarding academy (nearly all high schools in East Africa, both public and private, are boarding schools), but the demons went with her. Every night now, she was terrorized by demons. Unable to concentrate on her studies, she eventually dropped out of school and began doing drugs and alcohol. At the age of sixteen, she ran away from home and became a prostitute, working at a night club.

In spite of Muthoni’s efforts to get her daughter to come home, she refused—until she became sick and was diagnosed with HIV. When she did return home, Muthoni’s daughter threatened to kill her. She informed her mother that she had been initiated into occultism, and was now serving and worshipping the devil.

Where could Sister Muthoni find help? She was desperate.

Reflect: Have you ever been in a desperate situation? When trials are overwhelming, it is often then that we most earnestly seek help from the Lord.
