We Are But Dust
Read Time: 2 min

For ages, people have been trying to rid their households of dust. From the woman in Jesus’ parable of the lost coin who swept her house to the challenges of floating dust in the International Space Station, dust is everywhere. Each year, the average household collects 40 pounds of dust made up of pollen, hair, textile fibers, soil minerals, and dead skin!
Not all dust is bad. The largest source of atmospheric dust is the Sahara Desert. It blows 770 million tons of dust across the Atlantic to South America, where it fertilizes the ocean and the Amazon rainforest. This dust impacts the air temperature, ground cooling, and rainfall levels.
The Bible tells us that God “formed man of the dust of the ground” (Genesis 2:7). Abraham humbly admitted when talking with God, “Indeed now, I who am but dust and ashes have taken it upon myself to speak to the Lord” (Genesis 18:27). Fortunately, by God’s grace, “He raises the poor from the dust and lifts the beggar from the ash heap” (1 Samuel 2:8).
It should come as no surprise that when we die, we return to dust. God explained to Adam, “For dust you are, and to dust you shall return” (Genesis 3:19). When humans were created, a body made of dust was combined with the breath of life to produce a living being. At death, the inverse takes place: the body returns to the ground and the breath of life returns to God. “His spirit departs, he returns to the earth; in that very day his plans perish” (Psalm 146:4).
The soul does not exist apart from the body; it is not a conscious entity. There is no Bible verse that suggests some part of us lives beyond death. Rather, Scriptures plainly teach, “The soul who sins shall die” (Ezekiel 18:20). Until the resurrection, all who die return to dust.
