A Deeper Connection

In May 1844, Samuel F. B. Morse inaugurated the world’s first commercial telegraph line. Within ten years, more than 20,000 miles of telegraph cable crisscrossed the United States. By 1854, Cyrus West Field, a businessman and financier from New York City, set about to string a cable that would stretch across the Atlantic Ocean to Britain.

Field’s first attempt was made in 1857, but the cable broke twice and had to be pulled off the sea floor and repaired. Another unsuccessful effort was made the next year. Finally, in August 1858, a complete cable was laid and Queen Victoria sent a message to President James Buchanan praising “this additional link between the nations.” Buchanan replied, “May the Atlantic telegraph, under the blessing of heaven, prove to be a bond of perpetual peace and friendship between kindred nations.”

When Christ came to our world to live and die and rise again, He restored a link between heaven and earth that would never be broken. Jesus explained this divine connection to Nathanael when He said that angel messengers would ascend and descend “upon the Son of Man” (John 1:51).

Christ’s reference went back to a dream God gave Jacob of a ladder that “was set up on the earth, and its top reached to heaven; and there the angels of God were ascending and descending on it” (Genesis 28:12). God assured the deceptive young man that He was reaching down to restore a broken connection. He desires to do the same with you.

When we receive Christ into our hearts, it creates a bond of peace and friendship with God. Our relationship becomes deeper and stronger as we grow in grace. Paul describes the power of this connection: “Now may the God of peace Himself sanctify you completely; and may your whole spirit, soul, and body be preserved blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ” (1 Thessalonians 5:23).
