Feeling at Home

How do you make visitors feel at home? Luxury hotels compete to provide a comfortable environment that makes guests want to come back. What do they have that you could also supply for guests in your own home? First of all, provide friends and family with a comfortable bed—not a foam pad or a sofa that’s too short. And make sure you put crisp, clean sheets on the bed. Set on the nightstand a clock radio and maybe a bottle of water with a glass.

Provide a quiet place for guests to escape to. Furnish the room with a relaxing chair, a reading nook with a few great books and magazines, and a reading lamp. Eliminate clutter and make the guest room free of stuff in the way. Have some bare tabletops, empty drawers, and closet space available. And if you really want to go the extra mile, have a few cozy robes and slippers waiting.

Do you know that God is working to provide the perfect home for you? But in the heavenly land, you will not be a temporary guest. Jesus said, “I go to prepare a place for you” (John 14:2, emphasis supplied). You will not be overnight company, for Christ said, “If I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself; that where I am, there you may be also” (verse 3). The apostle Paul said that when Christ comes and we rise to meet Him in the air, “we shall always be with the Lord” (1 Thessalonians 4:17).

Not only will we have a home in “the city” (Hebrews 11:10), but we will “inherit the earth” (Matthew 5:5). It’s a place we’ll never want to leave.
