When Jesus died did the trinity suffer?

Scripture:
When Jesus returns, will God the Father be with Him? Jesus tells a parable in Matthew 25 that tells us that when we treat the poor kindly or unkindly, we have treated Jesus the same way. If God knows all things, then God the Father would have suffered when Jesus died.

Caller:  Yes hello – my question is, when Jesus Christ died on the Cross, did the Second Person of the Trinity, which spans the whole universe, galaxies, eternity, did God suffer with it?

Pastor Doug:  Yes.  Let me tell you why.  Jesus tells a parable in Matthew 25 where He said that, ‘I was hungry, you gave me food I was naked, you gave me clothes I was thirsty, you gave me drink I was a stranger or in prison, you came to me.’  And they’ll say, ‘When?’ He’ll say, ‘In as much as you did it to the least of these, you did it to me.’

Bob, do you agree that God knows everything?

Caller:  Yes.

Pastor Doug:  Can God feel everything that I feel?

Caller:  Yes.

Pastor Doug:  I mean you know politicians tell us, ‘I feel your pain’ – but I have my doubts that they really do.

Caller:  Yeah right.

Pastor Doug:  God does feel our pain doesn’t He?

Caller:  Yeah.

Pastor Doug:  So because God is aware of every sensation in the universe, did God – the Father, Son and Spirit – all feel the suffering together?

Caller:  No.

Pastor Doug:  Well I believe so.

Caller:  Think so?

Pastor Doug:  I do.  I believe that since God knows all things – you agree God knows all things right?

Caller:  Yeah.

Pastor Doug:  Then could God experience…

Caller:  …all that suffering?

Pastor Doug:  Yes, of course.  Let me ask you, are you a parent?

Caller:  No.

Pastor Doug:  All right, well you can answer anyway.

Caller:  Ok.

Pastor Doug:  Suppose you’re a parent.

Caller:  Right.

Pastor Doug:  And someone was going to torture your child in front of you.

Caller:  Right.

Pastor Doug:  Would it hurt you?

Caller:  Yes.

Pastor Doug:  …even though they’re not touching you.

Caller:  I see your point.

Pastor Doug:  Would God the Father suffer when they tortured His Son?

Caller:  Yes.

Pastor Doug:  Okay.  There’s my answer.

Caller:  That’s good enough for me ? Thanks a lot.

Pastor Doug:  All right.  Good question.  Appreciate it.

Caller:  All right.  Bye.
