Standing Ovation, Extraordinary Opportunity

It’s not unusual for audiences at film festivals to stand and cheer for a new movie, but it is unusual for critics to go on applauding for ten minutes—as they did for Mel Gibson’s World War II action drama Hacksaw Ridge at the 73rd Venice Film Festival. The major motion picture dramatizes the true story of Desmond Doss, a war hero and the first conscientious objector to receive the Medal of Honor.

Unusual for mainstream films featuring A-List actors, Hacksaw Ridge does not hide or diminish the vital role of Christianity in the story of Doss, a Sabbath keeper who refused to carry a weapon even into combat. The title of the film refers to the location of Doss’ most well-known feat, rescuing 75 wounded soldiers during the battle of Okinawa.

Doss’ faith played a central role in his decision to not carry a weapon. He was ridiculed by fellow soldiers and almost booted from military service by his commanding officers. But his determination to obey God and serve his country led others to respect him and his extraordinary courage. The film will be released in the United States on November 4. Some see it as a possible Oscar contender.

Producer Bill Mechanic worked for 13 years to bring the project to the screen. He called Hacksaw Gibson’s “greatest film.” Gibson and the principal actors were overwhelmed and left speechless by the standing ovation. Gibson told the press that Doss “does something extraordinary and supernatural, really, that inspired me.”

Millions will see Hacksaw Ridge and many of them will want to know more about the religious convictions of this heroic soldier. Amazing Facts has helped produce a new book called The Hero of Hacksaw Ridge that also reveals Doss' specific religious beliefs. Whether you already know about Doss’ religious convictions, this book will provide you and your friends with a clearer understanding of the faith that made the man.

If the truth be told, Doss would never want people to give him a standing ovation. (And Amazing Facts would never recommend people go see the film.) But as you will discover in The Hero of Hacksaw Ridge, this brave soldier always gave the glory to God for protecting him when under brutal fire.
