A Malware Takeover
A computer virus known as WannaCry has spread rapidly around the world, successfully attacking more than 200,000 terminals across airlines, hospitals, universities, and small businesses across 150 countries. Known as ransomware, WannaCry locks files on affected computers and requires payment—a ransom paid using Bitcoin currency—to grant victims access again. News outlets have reported that some victims have indeed been able to access their files after paying the ransom.

The virus was slowed significantly by a researcher in the United Kingdom, who was following typical protocol in the Tech World for disarming such malware. Because of his quick work, businesses in the United States have largely been spared. Microsoft also provided a patch in March that fixed the flaw in its Windows XP system; unfortunately, many companies did not install the update on all their computers, leaving them vulnerable to the virus.

This kind of malicious attack is not the first of its kind. Its roots go back thousands of years to a time when heaven was attacked by an insider who took advantage of a vulnerability: the ability to choose. Since God allows His created beings to think and choose for themselves, rather than being mere robots, He made His kingdom vulnerable to this kind of rebellion.

This freedom was used by one of His most intelligent created beings to successfully wrestle away loyalty that belongs to God. “You were the anointed cherub who covers; I established you; you were on the holy mountain of God; you walked back and forth in the midst of fiery stones. You were perfect in your ways from the day you were created, till iniquity was found in you. By the abundance of your trading you became filled with violence within, and you sinned" (Ezekiel 28:14-16). Unfortunately, this virus called sin has also affected our planet in terrible ways ever since.

God’s perfect plans for our world were hijacked by Lucifer, now called Satan, the enemy. But God was not surprised; He even had a solution in place to restore the destruction caused by the devil’s “ransomware” plot (1 Peter 1:17-21). The amazing part of God’s plan is that it still allows for freedom of choice. You can find out more about this amazing story and how you can find true freedom from the virus of sin in your life.
