An End to Pain

An End to Pain
This year, more than 60,000 Americans will die from drug overdoses. The majority will result from the misuse of prescription opioid painkillers—such Percocet and OxyContin—and illegal substances, such as heroin. These narcotics have been with us for decades, but the increasing availability of the synthetic opioid called fentanyl is causing a shockingly sharp increase in overdose deaths. Last year saw about twice as many fatalities from synthetic opioids in the United States.

Fentanyl is cheap to produce and, at fifty times the strength of heroin, it packs a powerful punch—which makes it popular with drug dealers. Although some addicts seek out this new drug for its intensity, others would rather avoid it and often don’t realize they are receiving drugs with fentanyl added. And it takes only a tiny amount to be deadly.

Every year, doctors prescribe opioid painkillers for legitimate reasons. When a person is in intense pain, such as after surgery, an accident, or a heart attack, they need the relief these drugs can give. In this usage, they are a great blessing. The problem comes when they are overprescribed or abused by those who have become addicted to them. People who are addicted to painkillers really do experience intense pain when they stop taking the drugs. Without a treatment plan, they are trapped into using them to eliminate their pain.

Our world throbs with incalculable amounts of both physical and emotional pain and, sadly, people often become entangled in the devil’s “solutions,” which only add to their suffering. God, on the other hand, offers solid, genuine answers to human suffering. Not only does He provide support, comfort, and guidance right now, but His promises guarantee that He will soon make a permanent end to all pain.

“God will wipe away every tear from their eyes; there shall be no more death, nor sorrow, nor crying. There shall be no more pain, for the former things have passed away” (Revelation 21:4). God has an incredible plan for our world that includes “new heavens and a new earth in which righteousness dwells” (2 Peter 3:13), and He wants you to be a part of it!
